Minor illnesses are defined as any illness that is not life-threatening. They can, however, cause further complications to arise if not treated. What minor illnesses can I go to urgent care for?

Knowing when to visit urgent care is important. If you have a life-threatening illness or injury, urgent care would not be appropriate for that situation. People can come to urgent care facilities to be treated for minor illnesses. Usually, they can be treated with antibiotics or other medications. Below are some common illnesses treated in an urgent care facility:

  • Urinary tract infections (UTI)
  • Allergies and asthma
  • Pink eye
  • Mono
  • Bronchitis
  • Common cold
  • Flu(influenza)
  • Ear Infection
  • Strep throat
  • Head lice

Can you get worm treatment on minor ailments?

Ringworm is difficult to prevent. Even before symptoms make their first appearance, the fungus that causes ringworm is contagious. To help reduce your risk of ringworm, wash your hands often to avoid the spread of infection, avoid infected animals, and avoid excessive sweating. On pets, the infection will often have a missing patch of fur with exposed skin. In some cases, you may not notice any signs of the infection on a pet. In this case, ask your veterinarian to check your pets for ringworm if you are concerned they may be infected and avoid sharing personal items.

Ringworm is easily treated at AFC Urgent Care. Ringworm is treated with topical antifungal creams when it appears on open skin. Prescriptions creams need to be applied less frequently and are more potent than the over the counter creams. Ringworm is usually not contagious after 3-4 days of using the topical antifungal cream but it can take a few weeks before the rash disappears. Be sure to check the entire body for newly forming rashes and use the cream until the rash is completely gone to ensure the infection does not return.

Can you get antibiotics on minor ailments?

What’s the cause of your illness? Oftentimes, viruses are the cause of many illnesses such as the common cold. If your provider believes a virus is the cause, an antibiotic will not help you recover. The best therapy is supportive care with fluid intake, over the counter products as directed by your healthcare provider, and cough drops.

Antibiotics should only be taken for the condition in which it was prescribed and only prescribed when needed for bacterial infections. The use of antibiotics may lead to complications including Clostridium difficile infection (infectious diarrhea) and the developing drug-resistant bacteria. Your provider should choose the shortest duration needed to take care of your infection.

If you come into urgent care with a bacterial illness, you will likely be prescribed an antibiotic. Antibiotics will help you overcome your infection more effectively and quickly. You may be given some of this medication while still at the facility for your initial visit.
